The PM who was spending 60% of their time on coordination overhead — ticket wrangling, status chasing, meeting facilitation — is now free to spend that time on the work that only humans can do well: understanding the business context behind technical decisions, building organizational alignment, and making the calls that no model can make because they require knowing what actually matters.
The question for most engineering organizations isn't whether AI project management in software development will change their workflows. It already has. The question is whether the role definitions, tooling, and governance structures are keeping pace.

The answer isn't to slow down the agents. It's to build review systems that can operate at the same speed. Code review tooling that understands AI-generated diffs. Policy enforcement that happens at commit time, not deployment time. Audit trails that capture not just what changed, but why the agent made the choices it made.
The New Shape of a Software Team
In the near future, a high-performing software team won't look like a product manager writing tickets for developers to implement. It will look like a small group of senior engineers and product thinkers directing a fleet of AI agents — reviewing their outputs, adjusting their direction, and handling the exceptions that require human judgment.
